Worked last year at TCS Tata Consultancy Services in their office location at Houston. Recommend it if you get a chance.
Not very good
TCS is a brand name to reckon with and I am very happy to be a part of the company. The work culture of the company is great; social interaction between colleagues are encouraged and the mentors do look after your growth. The stress level depends on what kind of project you are in. The global presence means you get to work in different countries which has been great for me as I loved to be in new culture and work environment. Also you have a chance to learn new technologies as the client base of the company is huge. I have the luck to work for a Fortune 500 company and learn from their business environment. On the flip side, the company is very huge, so promotions take time. The appraisals are there, but not very clear on what are the parameters on which I am being judged. The salary is not that great but they have good Vacation/health plans.
You can go far in TCS if you are ready to work hard. The learning opportunities are huge but it also depends on the employee to motivate himself to learn them. What I hate is that, the company expects engineers to do all kinds of paper works which slows our actual work. They should hire proper people to handle this aspect of the job.
I have been with the company nearly a decade and seen it grow to a global enterprise. I have easily moved between domains to domain and learn from each of them. My loyalty has been rewarded but lately, I find myself in a stagnant phase. The promotions are becoming little slow and the pay rise not adequate. I have seen some of the colleagues become lazy and the job security means they don’t try to work that hard. The company has layers of approval needed for smallest changes and a better part of my day is spent in answering emails. This email culture needs to be reduced if the company wants to be the best in the world.
As a new recruit, I have benefitted largely from the training program of the company. There is much flexibility in the work schedule and the work ethics of the co-workers motivates me more. The work-life balance is but the pay package is not that good.
I left the company after reaching mid-level positions as the work was becoming low tech for me. Their focus was turning towards BPO like work more rather than high risk development work. Being a large company, the promotion speed was slow to start with and hence I felt it was time to leave. That is when I found that there separation policy is horrible!
If you are in the right project in TCS that go like lightning, then you are in for a good time. You can learn fast in short span and will be able to build your career. But if you are in a project with mediocre people, be ready to be frustrated. They will do everything possible to not work and drag you down as well. The micro-management of the company and their penchant for filling reports make that easy for them!
This is a good place to start, as they have quite a lot of positions available with Microsoft and T Mobile. However, at least in my opinion, (and i worked with them) they do not incentivise technical competence. To them it does not really matter whether you are an expert or a novice as long as you are familiar with the technology in some way. They don't treat their employees to well either, to summarize good place to start and do short term projects for, but not longer association.
TCS is a great place to start at, but when I was there (a few years ago) they seemed to be little incentive for technically talented people to stay.
TCS is a great multinational company and India's most valuable company. It has some amazing tie-ups with Microsoft, Boiing, AT&T and many other big companies. TCS HR policies are one of the best policies which favors Employees. I have had been very happy to work with TCS for Microsoft for 5 years. Looking forward to work with TCS again :)
