Based on several surveys, ATS/VMS software company reports and news articles, it is estimated that most large companies have an employee to contractor ratio of 1:1 now. Lockheed Martin has 115,000 employees, so we'd estimate it employs 115,000 contractors. While this number may seem high, remember that while most Lockheed Martin employees are engineers, it requires an extensive workforce of contractors for all the non-core work involved in making the company work- like software and map testing, content creation and checking, technical writing, paralegals for drafting contracts, procurement specialists, HR coordinators, recruiters, sourcers, customer service, technical support, delivering groceries, cafeteria, etc.
There are reviews that confirm Lockheed Martin converts some contractors to full-time. Our estimate of contractor to fulltime conversion would be around 10% or 11,500 out of the 115,000 contractors might get converted every year. Let us know if you have better information.
