The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is the U.S. government’s principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services, especially for those who are least able to help themselves. HHS is responsible for almost a quarter of all federal outlays and administers more grant dollars than all other federal agencies combined.
HHS works closely with state and local governments and many HHS-funded services are provided at the local level by state or county agencies, or through private sector grantees. The Department's programs are administered by divisions, including the U.S. Public Health Service and human services agencies. In addition to the services they deliver, the HHS programs provide for equitable treatment of beneficiaries nationwide. The U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is a uniformed service of more than 6,000 health professionals who serve in many HHS and other federal agencies. The Surgeon General is head of the Commissioned Corps.
Departmental leaders are among the most qualified public servants in the Federal Government and are dedicated to ensuring the guidance and management necessary to support the health and well-being of the nation. Below is our list of leadership positions with links to their biographies in three sections:
· Office of the Secretary
· Operating Divisions
· Regional Offices
Office of the Secretary Staff Divisions (StaffDivs) - The Office of the Secretary provides leadership through several offices that oversee operations, provides guidance, and ensures that funds are spent wisely and laws are followed fairly.
Operating Divisions (Opdivs) - HHS has 11 operating divisions, including eight agencies in the U.S. Public Health Service and three human services agencies, which administer a wide variety of health and human services and conduct life-saving research for the nation. These agencies protect and serve all Americans.
Regional Offices - The 10 regional offices are responsible for operations and watch care over programs at the local level advising the Secretary about strategic operational activities related to program implementation.
Health Care Insurance
HHS’ Medicare program is the nation’s largest health insurer, handling more than 1 billion claims per year. Medicare and Medicaid together provide health care insurance for one in four Americans. The Affordable Care Act makes health insurance coverage more secure and reliable for Americans who have it, makes coverage more affordable for families and small business owners, and brings downs skyrocketing health care costs that have put a strain on individuals, families, employees, and our federal budget.
Public Health Programs
HHS strengthens and modernizes health care to improve patient outcomes, promote efficiency and accountability, ensure patient safety, encourage shared responsibility, and work toward high-value health care. HHS also is improving access to culturally competent quality health care for uninsured, underserved, vulnerable, older, and special needs populations.

Social Service Programs
HHS agencies work together and collaborate across federal departments to maximize the potential benefits of various programs, services, and policies designed to improve the well-being of individuals, families, and communities. Many HHS agencies fund essential human services to those who are least able to help themselves, often through the Department's state, local, and tribal partners.
Research
HHS expands scientific understanding of how to advance health care, public health, human services, biomedical research, and the availability of safe medical and food products. Chief among these efforts are the identification, implementation, and rigorous evaluation of new approaches in science, health care, public health, and human services that reward efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability.
