EmblemHealth is a health maintenance organization (HMO) and health insurance company based in New York City. It is a $10 billion company with 3.4 million members. In May 2013, Frank Branchini became chairman and chief executive officer, succeeding Anthony Watson, who retired. Watson's compensation, $8.8 million in 2011, was often discussed. In contrast, Mark Wagar, president and CEO of Empire BlueCross BlueShield, the largest New York insurer, was paid $2.2 million.
Watson managed the 2006 merger of Group Health Incorporated (GHI) and Health Insurance Plan of New York (HIP) into EmblemHealth. EmblemHealth is headquartered at 55 Water Street in Lower Manhattan, New York City. In 2004, HIP Health Plan had moved 2,000 of its employees to 55 Water Street, the largest corporate relocation to Lower Manhattan since the September 11 attacks. Although discussions about for-profit conversion have taken place, the organization remains a non-profit.
