San Francisco is a major city of California, the anchor of the Bay Area, well-known for its liberal community, well regarded universities, high tech startups, architecture, proximity to wineries, hilly terrain,scenic beauty, and ethnic and cultural diversity. These make San Francisco one of the most visited cities in the world. San Francisco is located on a small seven-by-seven mile square of land at the tip of a peninsula between the San Francisco Bay and the Pacific coast. It has a population of 815,000, but is the center of a metropolitan area of 7.1 million. The Bay Area (more fully, the San Francisco Bay Area), around the San Francisco Bay includes cities like Oakland, Berkeley, Santa Clara, Palo Alto and San Jose. Once a focus of Spanish missions and Gold Rush prospectors, the Bay Area is now best known for its high-tech industry (Silicon Valley). The most well known being Apple, Cisco Systems, eBay, Facebook, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Oracle, and Yahoo!. The area is also famous as the place most software startups tend to originate.
